Ever wonder what to do with that blank wall?
Gallery walls are a great way to spruce up that blank wall in your living room, dining room, hallway, or even stairwells. Gallery walls can be created just about anywhere you have a blank canvas. These types of walls do not only need to be photographs of family members, they could also be collections of art that add color to the walls. Visually gallery walls create a large impact and can be created on a budget!
First off, if you are lacking an extensive art collection you can pull from, try going to flea markets, vintage yards, auctions, craigslist etc. to find some really unique pieces that speak to you. The main purpose of collecting art is because the piece means something to you, whether it is how it makes you feel or if there is an actual emotional attachment to it. Other ways to begin a collection is from traveling, this is one of my favorite ways of collecting art. Many of us find ourselves taking photos of random moments we find beautiful, why not take that photograph and transform it into a piece of art for your home? I have gathered some of my favorite gallery walls, as well as some of my not so favorite!
Mix canvases and frames, using different shapes and styles
Mixing sculptural art pieces provides a different depth to the gallery wall
Use open frames to let the wallpaper, brick wall, or paint color to be framed out
Gallery walls work great in small spaces
Remember you aren't limited to the traditional nail in wall. Try simply leaning frames or art against the wall, shelves, cabinets, or even the floor
You don't have to limit your space
Conservative? Try uniformity
Gallery walls work great going down a staircase
Try one color frame to keep the focus on what's within them
Be sure to keep spacing between the frames even
Don't have art or photography to put up? Try using mirrors
Don't use the same size frame, be bold and use a mixed variation of sizes and shapes
I understand you want to display many memorable moments but don't go over the top
Be sure to be aware of the distance from the top and bottom
Spacing is crucial when creating a gallery wall
Don't cluster frames in the center of the wall; use the space as your art canvas
